Dezso Gluck

This photo was taken in Budapest in 1891. This is Dr. Dezso Gluck, who was my maternal grandmother's brother. He is 24 years old in the picture, I don't know what kind of uniform he is wearing and why. He was a doctor, a surgeon at sea for a while. First of all, because he had tuberculous osteitis and he expected to get better because of the sea air. But he liked to travel very much, too. And also to read. From his library, besides the many volumes of classical literature, an 1844 Vienna edition of Welt Panorama and Karoly Eotvos's book, 'Utazas a Balaton korul' [Traveling around the Balaton] remained, among others. He also had books on Judaism, and he gave some nice prayer books to his niece, my mother.
