Ela Stankova

In this photo is my older sister Ela (Stankova, nee Bachnerova). It was taken in the 1920s, in the Aladar Vermes studio in Topolcany. My sister Ela was born in 1907 in Banovce nad Bebravou. Ela was a seamstress and managed to survive the Holocaust. She survived thanks to the fact that she was the head of a sewing workshop in the Novaky labor camp. After the suppression of the Slovak National Uprising she hid out using forged papers in a town not far from Banska Bystrica. She hid there along with her son Ivan, at that time five years old.
