This exhibition illustrates what Jewish life was like in 20th century Hungary, Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Slovenia, and Austria. 

This exhibition includes 40 roll up posters that give insight to many aspects of Jewish Hungarian life, such as: work, leisure, school, the Holocaust, community life, life in the army, and portraits. 

Centropa exhibitions are not to look at, they are to engage with. These personal stories and fates make this exhibition interesting and unique. Thanks to the teachers who cooperate with Centropa, we have developed several ideas for using the exhibition in schools. 

Each poster is 205cm in length, and 85cm in width. Each poster weighs roughly 2.7kg, making the exhibition a total of 108kg. 

"Die Bibliothek der geretteten Erinnerung" wurde erstmals im Linzer Wissensturm am 26.10.2009 durch die damalige Nationalratspräsidentin Barbara Prammer und den damaligen Vizebürgermeister von Linz, Klaus Luger, als Projekt von Linz2009 Kulturhauptstadt Europas der Öffentlichkeit präsentiert. Sie ist mit mehr als 100 Roll-up Postern die bisher größte Centropa-Ausstellung.

Sie ist zweisprachig gestaltet (Englisch und Deutsch) und in drei geographische Kategorien unterteilt: Mitteleuropa, Balkan und Länder der ehemaligen Sowjetunion.

Anhand von persönlichen Geschichten und den sie begleitenden Fotos erzählt diese Ausstellung das 20. Jahrhundert aus der Perspektive unserer Interviewpartner: jüdische Zeitzeugen aus 15 Ländern.

Diese im Rahmen des Projekts HerStories entstandene Ausstellung beleuchtet die europäisch-jüdische Geschichte des 20. Jahrhunderts aus dem Blickwinkel von sieben jüdischen Frauen aus Deutschland, Polen, Griechenland, Spanien, Ungarn, der Slowakei und Tschechien. 

Sie nehmen uns mit auf eine Reise durch Zeit und Raum. Auf den Spuren dieser sieben Jüdinnen durchschreiten wir das gesamte 20. Jahrhundert: von den ersten Jahrzehnten und der Zwischenkriegszeit über den Zweiten Weltkrieg und den Holocaust bis hin zur Nachkriegszeit. 

Die Interviews mit Rosa, Katarína, Ludmila, Irena und Vera, die Memoiren von Lisa sowie die Biographie und der Bericht von Rosls Tochter Dory geben uns unschätzbare Einblicke in das Leben dieser Frauen. 

Die gesammelten (Über-)Lebensgeschichten offenbaren nicht nur individuelle Schicksale, sondern erläutern auch ihre Rollen als Frauen in der Gesellschaft und ihre Überlebensstrategien während des Kriegs. Sie illustrieren, wie diese Frauen nach dem Holocaust ihre Leben wieder aufbauten. Die Ausstellung verknüpft die sieben Biographien miteinander und vermittelt somit ein vielschichtiges Bild der europäisch-jüdischen Geschichte des 20. Jahrhunderts aus weiblicher Perspektive.

This exhibition, created in the framework of the HerStories project, conveys the multifaceted Jewish history of the 20th century in Europe through the biographies of seven Jewish women from Germany, Poland, Greece, Spain, Hungary, Slovakia and Czechia. 

Travelling in the footsteps of seven European Jewish women ‒ through time and space ‒ we can see where they were in particular moments in history, what they experienced and how they felt during the first decades of the 20th century, the interwar period, the dark years of the Second World War and the Holocaust, and postwar Europe. Oral history interviews with Rosa, Katarína, Ludmila, Irena, and Vera, Lisa's memoir and biography, and the account of Rosl's daughter Dory, give us invaluable insight into their lives. 

These stories reveal not only individual views and decisions, but also their roles in society, their survival strategies, as well as their worlds falling apart and then being rebuilt in the postwar years. This way the unique story and experience of each woman ‒ juxtaposed and intertwined with one another ‒ reveals the complexity and diversity of 20th century European Jewish history. 

We can not travel in time. We can not enter the photo studio of Emil Keglovits in Szeged in 1912, when Zsigmond Braun and Aranka Buchhalter pose for their wedding picture. We can not enjoy the holiday in Abbazia in 1916 with wealthy families. We can not visit the butchery of Simon Goldgruber, where he told about all his memories from the first world war. We can not be guests at the traditional Jewish wedding of Henrik Klein and Rózsa Wagschal in 1910 in Máramarossziget (today's Romania), and can not ask Paula Feith, who was a nurse in a military hospital during the first world war.

But we can ask elderly Jews to share their old family photos with us, and tell the stories of their ancestors. This exhibition shows the time of the first world war through personal stories and family photographs - in a subjective way.

Information about setting up the exhibition

The exhibition can be set up in a 250-300 square meter space. The exhibition panels are hanged from the ceiling and are two-sided, therefore it is important that the exhibition space has 350-400 cm inner height. The hanging system has to be 350 cm wide and has to have 25 kg carrying capacity. The exhibition contains three screens, for which electricity is needed. Some panels might need to be drilled to the wall. The full packaged exhibition size is 1,3x1,5x0,5 meters, without the hanging equipment (4x0,2x0,2 meters). We are also happy to provide all the graphic materials for the exhibitor.

A kiállítás egy-egy német, lengyel, görög, spanyol, magyar, szlovák, illetve cseh nő életútján keresztül mutatja be a 20. század sokszínű európai zsidó történelmét. 

A történetek nem csak az üldöztetés, a deportálás és a menekülés megéléséről szólnak, hanem a túlélésről, a holokauszt és a II. világháború utáni újjáépítésről is. A kiállítást bejárva megtudhatjuk, hogy milyen volt zsidó családban felnőni a háború előtt, a visszaemlékezésekben felelevenednek szerelemek, iskolai élmények, mindennapi remények és küzdelmek. 

A kiállítás könnyen mozgatható, 15 db 85x200 cm-es rollup-ból áll. A NőTörténetek (HerStories) projekt honlapján (https://www.her-stories.eu/hu) megtalálhatók a kiállítás alapjául szolgáló élettörténetek  magyar, angol, valamint öt másik nyelven, a hozzátartozó fotókkal.

About the exhibition:

Stories from a Family Album is a traveling exhibition created from the personal stories and family photographs of Jews who lived through the 20th century—individuals whom Centropa interviewed between 2000 and 2009. Designed like a giant photographic family album you can walk through, it tells the stories of people who could have lived on your street, in your town—bakers and factory workers, teachers and nurses, translators and doctors, administrators and bookkeepers, people who went to school, fell in love, built families, served their country as soldiers, or enjoyed summer vacations.

The exhibition is filled with moments ranging from the happiest to the darkest—stories that will make visitors laugh, cry, and, above all, reflect on Hungarian Jewish history.

The exhibition consists of nine free-standing panels, each three meters long and two and a half meters tall. All images are digitally printed on both sides of the panels. Each panel focuses on a specific theme—such as school, religious life, vacation, or work—offering a vivid picture of the everyday life of Hungarian Jews in the 20th century. 

The exhibition is bilingual, in Hungarian and English. It fits into a small van, making it relatively easy to transport and install. It’s well-suited for school halls and corridors, libraries, and cultural centers.

The exhibition was created in partnership with the US Department of State and the Holocaust Memorial Center in Hungary.

About educational programs:

Centropa exhibitions are not to look at, they are to engage with. These personal stories and fates make this exhibition interesting and unique. The exhibition is available to schools with accompanying peer-guide training. The training is conducted by Centropa staff for groups of 15–18 students (grades 9–12). This interactive, one-day program (approximately 8 hours including breaks) can also count toward students’ School Community Service hours. During the session, students explore key moments of 20th-century Hungarian history, dive into Centropa’s collected family stories, learn about the richness of Jewish culture and identity, get to know the exhibition in depth, and prepare to become guides.

Nem tudjuk az órát visszaállítani. Nem tudunk 1912-ben bemenni Szegeden Keglovits Emil fotóműtermébe, ahol Braun Zsigmond és Buchhalter Aranka pózol esküvője alkalmával. Abbáziában sem lehetünk együtt 1916-ban egy jómódú nyaraló családdal. Ugyanúgy, ahogy nem léphetünk be abba a mészárszékbe, ahol Goldgruber Simon pálfai (Tolna m.) mészáros első világháborús emlékeit mesélte. Nem vehetünk részt Klein Henrik és Wagschal Rózsa esküvőjén sem, amely 1910-ben Máramarosszigeten (ma Románia), igazi hagyományos zsidó lakodalom volt, és nem kérdezhetjük meg Feith Paulát sem, aki az első világháború idején ápolónőként dolgozott egy katonai kórházban.

Azt azonban megtehetjük, hogy megkérünk idős zsidókat, meséljenek nekünk. Osszák meg velünk régi családi képeiket, és az azokon látható személyekhez és helyekhez kötődő emlékeiket. Ez a kiállítás az első világháború időszakát mutatja be személyes élettörténeteken és családi fényképeken keresztül, szubjektív olvasatban.

Információk a kiállítás felállításával kapcsolatban:

A kiállítás nagyjából 250-300 négyzetméteren kényelmesen felállítható. Mivel a molinók függeszthetőek és kétoldalasak, fontos, hogy legalább 350-400cm belmagasság adott legyen a kiállítótérben. Szükséges egy olyan (akár lámpáknak való) függesztő rendszer, amelynek egyik szélessége maximum 350 cm, teherbírása pedig legalább 25 kg. A három képernyő miatt fontos, hogy legyen állandó áramforrás a helyiségben. A falakat a táblásított anyagok felhelyezése miatt esetlegesen fúrni kell. A kiállítás elcsomagolva várhatóan 1,3x1,5x0,5m helyet foglal, amibe nem számít bele a függesztéshez használt lécezés (4mx0,2x0,2m). A grafikai anyagok, betűvágások, ablakfóliák, feliratok újragyártása megoldható, a forrásfájlokat örömmel a kiállító rendelkezésére bocsátjuk. 

"The Library of Rescued Memories" is an exhibition based on Jewish family stories from fifteen different countries, and the old family photos that go with them. The exhibition tells the story of the 20th century from the perspective of our interviewees: they came from families that were bakers and factory workers, teachers and nurses, translators and doctors, administrators and bookkeepers. The exhibition is filled with stories about childhood, school, love, marriage, building a family, and also about how people survived the Holocaust, how they could start their lives over. This exhibition is meant to be like a giant photographic family album you can walk through.

"The Library of Rescued Memories" was created  in 2009 and premiered in Linz, Austria on Oct 26, 2009 as a project of "Linz 2009 European Capital of Culture". With 110 roll-up banners  in English and German, it is our largest exhibition. It consists of stories from three geographical areas in Europe: Central Europe, the Balkans and countries of the Former Soviet Union.

A Történetek egy családi albumból című kiállítás nyolc téma köré rendezve, archív képek és személyes interjúk felhasználásával mutat be a múlt század zsidóságára jellemző életképeket. Hétköznapi emberekről szól, akik akár a szomszédaink is lehetnének: pékekről, gyári munkásokról, tanárokról, ápolónőkről. Magával ragadó történeteket láthatunk gyermekkorról, iskolás évekről, szerelemről, házasságról, gyermekvállalásról és arról, kinek-kinek hogyan sikerült túlélnie a holokauszt borzalmait, miként tudta újrakezdeni az életét. A hatalmas családi fotóalbumot lapozgatva mosolyogtató vagy elszomorító, szívmelengető vagy torokszorító történetek tárulnak a kiállítás látogatója elé.

A kiállítás 9 panelből áll, mindegyik körülbelül 2,5 méter széles és 240 cm magas. A panelek mindkét oldalán vannak képek és szövegek, úgyhogy fontos, hogy kényelmesen körbejárható legyen.
