Ester, Daniel and Jakob Neutstadt lighting Chanukkah candles

This picture was taken in 2002 on the occasion of lighting candles for the Chanukkah holiday. Our granddaughter Ester is lighting the candles. Sitting on the left is her brother Daniel, our grandson, and has his son Jakob on his lap. The picture was taken at Daniel's place, who lives not far from Dortmund. Daniel is 33 and is a music and English teacher. Ester is 28. She recently finished university; she studied music and history. Their mother tongue is German. But they also speak Slovak, with mistakes of course. All the more lovely. The times we've laughed at the muddles they've made in their ?Slovak.? I even wrote those muddles down. Daniel has already started his own family. His wife is named Katrin and they have two children. The boy is named Jakob and the little girl is Ella. So now I've become ?Opa Bercinko? [Grandpa Bercinko]. When she was 11, our granddaughter Esterka told us that someone had attacked her classmate, who is from Asia, whose side she took with these words: ?Why don't you leave her alone, she's just a person like we are, her skin's just a little differently colored...?
