Bernard Knezo Schönbrun in the work brigade standing in line for lunch

This photo shows part of the boys from the Sixth Labor Battalion that were concentrated in Cemerne in 1941. This is how we stood in like for lunch. Usually I was the tallest of the boys, and they would then be queued behind me and a primitive drill would follow. Right face, left face... I never respected it. In the photo I'm the fifth from the left. The second from the left was named Alino Weinman. He was a very strong boy. The two of us were considered to be the strongest. We were afraid of each other. In civilian life Alino was a plumber. If he would have knocked me down with his strong arm, he'd have killed me. But I, on the other hand, was an athlete and was capable of dodging him and giving a well-placed blow. So we respected each other. The eighth from the right was Michal Bachner. He survived the war and currently lives in Israel. The poor guy went blind, though.
