Bernard Knezo Schönbrun at preparations for the 10th All-Sokol Slet (Rally)

This photograph was taken in 1938. It shows high school students from Michalovce. We walked in a procession organized by the Michalovce branch of Sokol. We were preparing for the All-Sokol Slet (Rally). I am the first on the right in the first row. Walking on my right is Ladislav Svarc. We used to call him by his nickname, Kincal. During the war he joined the partisans. After liberation he graduated from medicine and moved with his wife to Israel. He was a very good guy. He's since died in Israel. Walking beside Svarc are Guttman and Jozef Weiss. We called Jozka Weiss ?Pici.? Compared to us, Guttman was ?more mature.? That was because he'd lived in Prague for some time, from where he'd moved to our town. During World War II Pici Weiss worked as a teacher in Jewish elementary schools, which were permitted. During that time I was very envious of him, because as a teacher he also got paid, around 700 or 800 Slovak crowns. Unfortunately, they then sent him to a concentration camp, where the poor wretch died. Walking right behind me is Markovic. He was also a very decent boy. During the war he joined the partisans and died in battle. He was from the town of Vinne.
