This was the first ID we got after returning from deportation. Later we got regular IDs. This membership card was issued on 21st September 1945. On it was written in two languages [besides Russian in Hungarian and Romanian]: 'Member of the Democratic Jewish Community of Kolozsvar city, Kolozs county'.
This card is what we showed to people if we had to verify that we were members. The memberships permitted us to eat in the canteen of the Democratic Jewish Community, for money of course. The food was pretty good in the canteen and for the money we paid we wouldn't have gotten such good food anywhere else. At the time the canteen didn't have a kosher kitchen, only later, when the canteen came under the supervision of the Jewish religious community.
