Laszlo Nussbaum -- Europe without Borders

A remarkable story of changing borders and stubborn optimism. Heinrich Nussbaum lived in the Austo-Hungarian Empire and had four sons who fought in the First World War. The empire collapsed and Europe was divided, but Heinrich didn't believe in borders and sent his sons to universities all over Europe: Sandor studied economics in Prague, Joseph became a doctor in Berlin, Laszlo received his degree in philosophy in Paris and Jeno, Laszlo's father, studied mathematics in Florence.

When war came, Sandor was killed in a Hungarian forced labor brigade, Laszlo was hidden by a familiy in Paris, Jeno was murdered in Buchenwald and Joseph, the doctor, fled to America, joined the US Army and entered Germany as a medic.

Our story belongs to Jeno's son Laszlo, who tells us that he lost his grandfather's optimism in the Buchenwald concentration camp and that it took until the Romanian revolution of 1989 to get it back.

Laszlo Nussbaum: Identity of the Jews from Transylvania in the 20. Century
History
This lesson is an opportunity to make the students understand the situation of the minorities, namely the Jewish minority, who lived in the 20th century South-Eastern Europe, where nationalism soared to alarming levels leading to extremism. The lesson is particularly relevant for its target audience, as it was conceived for a class in which Hungarians, Romanians, Orthodox, Catholics and Protestants study together. The lesson makes use of personal accounts of historic events in order to help the students understand and identify with the characters.The films used in the lesson are: Jewish Soldiers in the Austro-Hungarian Army, Laszlo Nussbaum: Europe without Borders and the Centropa interview with Eva Deutsch.  		en 10

Die hier präsentierten zwölf Unterrichtsentwürfe richten sich speziell an Berufsschulen. Sie basieren auf den Kurzfilmen von Centropa, sowie der DVD „Das Vermächtnis“ von _erinnern.at_ und kreisen um österreichisch-jüdische Lebensgeschichten des 20. Jahrhunderts. Die SchülerInnen werden eingeladen, sich mit der Geschichte dieser Menschen auseinanderzusetzen, und diese mit ihrer eigenen Geschichte, ihren eigenen Interessen und Fragen in Beziehung zu setzen.Die Beschäftigung mit der "grenzenlosen" Familiengeschichte von Laszlo Nussbaum ist der Ausgangspunkt dieser Lerneinheit. Auf Grundlage des Films werden die SchülerInnen dazu angeregt, sich mit ihrer eigenen Familiengeschichte auseinanderzusetzen. 		de
Egyediség és hasonlóság - a magyar zsidóság története a 20. században

Az órák célja a 20. századi magyar zsidóság történetének áttekintése családtörténeteken keresztül. Fő célom az volt, hogy a tanulók megismerjék a magyarországi zsidóság mindennapjait, lássák, hogy teljesen különböző családi, társadalmi háttérrel redndelkező emberek sorsa a Vészkorszak idején eggyé vált, hogy aztán a felszabadulás után ismét külön utakra váljon szét. Az órák tematikája a 2. világháború témakörébe illeszkedik, de nagyon fontos hangsúlyozni, hogy a Holocaust egyedisége folytán nem tekinthető tananyagnak, megismerése, előzményeinek és hatásainak végiggondolása viszont minden demokratikus gondolkodású ember kötelessége. 		hu 10
Laszlo Nussbaum: Europe without borders
History
This lesson about "Europe without borders, or what color is your flag?" uses a personal narrative, a Centropa film set in today’s Romania, and an oral history interview with the film’s subject, Lazslo Nussbaum, to alert students to how varying perspectives and methodologies can affect the ways in which we can know about the past. Because the story involves borders and loyalties, it is recommended to show a short narrated Centropa on Jewish soldiers in the Austro-Hungarian army beforehand. 		en 9
"20th Century Europe, as seen from Palestine-Israel"
History
Students will learn about historical events that took place in Europe in the 20th century, and see how those events were covered by newspapers in mandatory Palestine and (after 1948) Israel. After that, the students will interview one or more family members/friends who were alive at the time of the events. The students' findings will be presented in a paper and a video.The basic idea for this project was discussed by David Behrman, Victor Gurevich, and Yonathan Bar-On at the Centropa Winter Seminar, 10-11 December 2012. A basic lesson plan was then worked out by David Behrman and Yonathan Bar-On, each of whom adapted it for the specific needs of his class(es) and lessons. 		en 9
