Matilda and Salvator Israel

This is a picture of my husband Salvator Israel and I taken after we got engaged in Karnobat in 1942. We got engaged three days after we were introduced to each other. He charmed me with his sense of humor, his intellect and his interesting stories about his family and his life. After a few months we got married. Salvator went to study in France, Montpelier, and graduated in Paris as an medical doctor. He lived in France for ten years and after he graduated, he became an assistant in the university. Then he had to go back to Bulgaria, because he could not support himself. On his return in 1938, he worked for a while in the state hospital in Plovdiv and then opened his own medical practice where he worked until 1941. That year he was mobilized as a district physician and later as a municipal physician in Karnobat during the war. That is how we met. In 1942 we married in Karnobat. My husband was also sent to work as a physician in Nevestino, Gorna Oryahovitsa, Svishtov and Strazhitsa.
