Ester Elazar and her children

This photograph was taken in our house on Otez Paisii Street in Sofia in the 1920s. My aunt Zelma Avramova, nee Elazar, my grandma Ester Elazar, nee Beraha, and my mother Victoria Angelova, nee Elazar, are seated from left to right. Aunt Lunna Albelda, nee Alazar is standing on the left and aunt Paola Gadol, nee Elazar, on the right. The photo was taken when they saw off of some cousin of my mother's who left for America. I was raised by my mother in that house. I remember that the room where the photo was taken was a large anteroom which we entered straight from the front door. From this anteroom we could enter the other two rooms and the kitchen where it always smelled of coffee. The house was very humble. I don't remember if we used a gas lamp or a plate at that time as there was electricity in the house. We had a wood-burning stove for heating and my mother and grandmother used to cook on it as well. All my mother's sisters got married in Sofia without having any dowry because they were all very poor. After they moved to Sofia they all found jobs and contributed to the family's income. My mother wanted to have some qualification, attended a typing course and started work as a typist. She met my father at this course.
