Die Kalefs waren eine alte und traditionsreiche Belgrader Familie, die ihre Wurzeln mehr als 300 Jahre zurückverfolgen konnte. Doch dann fiel das nationalsozialistische Deutschland 1941 in Serbien ein:
Während die meisten ihrer Angehörigen erschossen oder vergast wurden, floh Dona Bat Kalef mit ihren zwei Töchtern, Breda und Matilda, in eine katholische Kirche in Banovo Brdo, einem Belgrader Stadtteil.
Als die Mutter den Priester um Hilfe bat, willigte dieser ein und rettete den letzten drei Kalefs so das Leben.
