Centropa Privacy Policy

Last updated: 02. March 2022.

Introduction

Since the founding of Centropa in 2001, we have always worked in close cooperation with partners, supporters, and teachers all around the world. Centropa’s mission is to work for educators, with educators. This close relationship, along with confidentiality and privacy are important to Centropa, and therefore we make sure that our Privacy Policy complies to GDPR, the General Data Protection Regulation of the European Union.

This Privacy Policy explains what kind of data we collect and why we collect it, as well as when we will use it and the conditions under which we will disclose it to others. The data collected by Centropa generally applies to teachers, educators, donors, partners, and our interviewees, all of whom share their personal information with us, each based on our relationship with them. This Privacy Policy may change occasionally, so please be sure to periodically check this page for any updates.

It is important for us at Centropa to know what visitors have to say about our policies. Any queries or concerns regarding this Policy or your user rights should be addressed to our technology and privacy coordinator, Péter Balla.

Where, why, and what kind of information we collect

Centropa largely collects both aggregate and personal information. Aggregate data does not allow you to be identified as an individual, but instead could be used for demographic information, such as to see what percentage of users access the website from which country or city. On the other hand, personal information is that which can be used to identify an individual. By using this website, you consent to the use of your aggregate and personal information by Centropa for the purposes described in this Privacy Policy (including providing your information to third parties in the circumstances encompassed by this Policy).

Centropa collects different information from different groups of people depending on what kind of services we provide to that certain group.

  1. Those who register on our website to create a user account give us their name, email address, profession, and if they are teachers, they also give us the name of their school / institution and the subject they teach. By giving us this information, users can log in to our website, bookmark content, and also upload content; thus Centropa can help users with their work effectively. We believe that it is important that our users contribute to our site, allowing Centropa to grow together with them.
  2. Those who take part in educational programs organized by Centropa, such as seminars, workshops, and student projects, are required to give us their name, email address, and phone number, as well as the name of their school or institution of employment. During the registration for these events, we might also ask other questions relevant to participation in the program. We collect this information to organize programs that meet the requirements of our participants to the fullest and provide a meaningful educational service.
  3. If you are a donor or a partner, Centropa collects your name, email address, phone number, address, and information about the donation amount and when it was given or about the event. This is so that Centropa must retain records about these contributions and better organize programs and materials accordingly.
  4. If you are a Holocaust survivor interviewed by Centropa, Centropa retains the signed agreements indicating that Centropa can upload your stories and photographs to our online database and use them in publications.
  5. If you fill in the Contact Form, the Report a Problem Form or the Book Ordering Form on our website, you give us information specified in those forms. This information is necessary to Centropa to answer and meet your requests.

What third parties and data processors do we work with?

The Centropa website uses cookies, pieces of information that some websites transfer to the computer that is browsing that website. They are used for record-keeping. Use of cookies performs certain tasks such as saving your passwords for repeated use or your personal preferences regarding your use of the website (i.e., making sure you go straight to the English Centropa website rather than the Hungarian). If you do not want your cookies to be used, this can be turned off on your browser in Settings.

Centropa uses your IP address, a number that is automatically assigned to your computer. An IP address, the time of the visit, and the page(s) visited are noted in Centropa’s server log files whenever a user accesses the website. Centropa makes use of IP addresses for calculating usage levels, fixing server problems, and administering the website’s services. It is standard for a website to collect IP addresses and it is done automatically by many websites and applications. Your approximate location may also be derived from your IP address, affecting which language you see the website in.

This is a program that uses cookies and similar technologies to analyze information about the use of the website and to observe activities and trends. Google Analytics also collects information regarding the use of other websites, apps, and resources. We use Google Analytics to develop our site and our user's experience. You can learn about Google's practices by going to www.google.com/policies/privacy/partners/.
