Haya-Lea wurde in der damals in Ostpolen gelegenen Stadt Riwne (Rovno) geboren. Heute gehört diese Stadt zur Ukraine. Haya-Lea wurde traditionell jüdisch erzogen, und als Jugendliche schloss sie sich der zionistischen Jugendorganisation Hashomer Hatzair an und wollte wie ihre ältere Schwester nach Palästina auswandern. Aber 1939 marschierte die Sowjetunion in Ostpolen ein, und Haya-Lea wurde aufgrund ihrer Mitgliedschaft in Hashomer Hatzair zu 10 Jahren Zwangsarbeit in Sibirien verurteilt. Der Rest der Familie blieb zurück, nicht ahnend, dass bald deutsche Truppen die Stadt einnehmen würden.
Haya-Lea überlebte den Gulag und zog nach Leningrad (heute St. Petersburg), wo sie 2002 ihre Lebensgeschichte mit Centropa teilte. Dieser Film ist Haya-Lea gewidmet, die kurz nach dem Interview verstarb.
