Mazal Asael

This is me in the 1970s. I had this photo taken in Sofia for an album of Jews that had been sent to concentration camps. There were just seven of us Jews in Sveti Nikola camp near Asenovgrad and around a hundred Bulgarians. We were all sent there because of our anti-fascist activities. The camps in Pleven and Somovit were for Jews only. Most of the Jewish youths decided to join the guerrilla squads in order to escape the mass internments that preceded the deportation to the concentration camps after May 24th 1943.
