The leadership of Maccabi in Varna

This is a photo of the leadership of Maccabi in Varna. The picture was taken in 1935. The first sitting from left to right is the president of Maccabi, Izak Romano. The second man sitting is Eliya Ushoev, the chairman of Maccabi. Two years ago he died in Israel. We kept in touch until the last moment. He visited me one or two times in Sofia. The third man is Sami Bensusam, head of cultural affairs in the organization. He also emigrated to Israel. The fourth man sitting is Nissim Baruh. He also lives in Israel. I remember him as a very honest, humble, friendly and nice man, like all the others on the photo. The man standing from left to right is Sami Moshonov. He provided technical assistance. He was a very humble and hard working man. His brother, whose name I do not remember, was burned alive in 1944 in a concentration camp in Kailuka, Pleven region, where a number of progressive Jews were sent, as well as Jews whose children had gone to fight the fascists and Jews who were detained during the protest demonstration in Sofia on 24th May 1943. That demonstration was against the internment of Sofia Jews into the country as the first stage and then - to the German concentration camps. The girl is Maria Baruh. She led the women's groups in Maccabi. And she was the right hand of Sami Bensusam. I am the last on the right. I was a member of Maccabi first, then of Hashomer Hatzair, in which I was even in the leadership. In Maccabi we often did gymnastics. I was responsible for the technical matters related to the organization of the events, etc.
