Jewish family stories, family photographs, new technologies, and interactivity in education
Since 2001, Centropa has been conducting successful social history research and developing educational methodologies in Hungary. We tell the story of Hungarian Jewish life from the late 19th century to the present through personal narratives, using interviews based on primary sources.
Centropa provides educators with innovative tools: multimedia films, traveling exhibitions, and lesson plans built on interviews, photographs, and family trees from our archive. In addition, we promote interactive and student-centered educational programs that incorporate project-based learning, experiential pedagogy, and digital technology to actively engage students. These programs include video competitions, peer guide training, family and local history research projects, creating student-curated exhibitions, and organizing school commemorations.
We offer a collaborative platform for teachers to exchange ideas and best practices, and we support our partner teachers in developing their own lesson plans and student-led projects.
Training themes:
- Introduction to Jewish traditions and a guided visit to a synagogue
- Presentation of Centropa archive and ideas for classroom use
- Screening of Centropa’s short multimedia films, followed by small group lesson planning sessions
- Introduction to Centropa’s pedagogical methods, with presentations by veteran Centropa teachers
- Introducing Centropa’s educational programs for students, including exhibitions, workshops and walking tours
- Meeting Holocaust survivors and hearing their personal stories
Methodology:
During the seminar, teachers work in small groups to develop lesson plans and project ideas inspired by Centropa’s materials and approach.
Formal requirements for the completion of the training:
- Minimum attendance of 90% of the total 30 training hours
- Submission of a lesson plan within three weeks in online form (no minimum or maximum length required)
- Total training duration: 30 hours
