The photo shows my grandfather and grandmother - Movsha and Rachel Zheleznyak. Grandfather is 51 on the photo, grandmother - 47 years old.
Grandfather was very artistic. He built his own house himself. He painted it beautifully, and everyone on the street came by to see it.
When the Germans attacked Vitebsk, he ran back to throw water and sand on the fires that broke out and he saved his house.
He helped all the neighbors, who never forgot that. Which is why they saved us when things got bad.
Also at the very beginning of the occupation, grandfather tore out a cellar in the house, to which a bed covered the entrance.
Over the bed was a carpet. In response to a slight knock at the door or a noise on the courtyard grandfather and grandmother hid in the cellar.
We lived in this scare for 11 months.
