Buena Mois Cestnik

This is my daughter Buena Mois Cestnik, nee Yulzari, at the wedding of her nephew, Mois Sinto Yulzari. The photo was taken in 2000 in Ruse.

Beti's picture was taken by my sister Matilda Sinto Melnik, nee Beniesh, when she came back from Houston, USA, where she lives with her family, for the wedding day of my grandson Mois Sinto Yulzari, who is the son of my son Sinto Yulzari.

I gave birth to my daughter, Buena, in 1941. The children then were born at home. We didn't go to hospitals as they do today. And I remember us staying at the windows on 1st March 1941 watching the Germans arriving. It was not a pleasant vision.

Beti completed her high-school education in Ruse. After that she went to study in Sofia where she completed her university education as an extramural student at the Mechanical Engineering Institute. She is an engineer. At the moment she is a teacher in 'automated machines' at the Technical High School for Clothing and Footwear.

My sister’s fate is interesting. She carried through her plan of studying medicine in Bulgaria, although my parents were against it because, as I mentioned before, their views on a woman’s place in society and in family were rather conservative.

Mati managed to complete her medical education in Bulgaria, and in 1949 she immigrated to Israel. She continued studying medicine there for three more years, after that she graduated as a doctor, served in the army, and then she immigrated to the USA where she lives with her family down to the present day. Now she is a widow but has an own psychiatric cabinet in Houston and is satisfied. From time to time Mati sends me some money, which helps us make both ends meet in Ruse.
