For years my mother made noodles. Father helped her make the dough, since that was the most physically arduous work. Then she rolled the dough out on plates on our beds, cut it with scissors, and dried it out in the sun on blankets in the courtyard. She packed the noodles in bags made of newspaper and sold them in shops or to neighbors. That was the family’s source of income. My parents wanted to move out of the quarter where we were living. It wasn’t easy for them there, but there wasn’t enough money for another apartment.
