Chernovtsy hadn't been destroyed by the war. Shops were open, and there was plenty of food and goods. People treated Jews nicely in Chernovtsy. There was no demonstration of anti-Semitism. We felt at home soon. The local people told us that the atmosphere had been like that for ages. Jews were patrons of the arts and music. The area initially belonged to the Austro- Hungarian Monarchy, and then Romania. There was a Jewish school and hospital for poor Jews and a Jewish children's hospital in Chernovtsy before the war. There were 67 synagogues! At present there is only one synagogue in town.
