My father’s cousins were from the Catalan family. ‘Catalan’ means ‘Catalonian’. That is, they were Spaniolit Jews [Spaniolit: a Bulgarianized word meaning in Ladino, ‘from Spain’ or ‘of Spanish origin’] and they spoke in Ladino to each other. My father was a cobbler; later he became a master cobbler. After the war he became a merchant and worked for his cousins. He wrote without any mistake, excellently. He knew Ladino, Turkish, French, and Bulgarian.
