They called assemblies from time to time and called people by name. Those who weren't called went back to Leninabad. Some three hundred people had arrived, fifty went back. I was in the latter group.

After returning to Leninabad at first I went every day and asked to be allowed to join the Polish army [17], but they kept turning me down. Eventually I found a job at a canned food factory.
