In this area where I live there weren’t many orthodox [Jews]. Well, there were a few of them, but not many, no. What the Jews in my area did, it’s hard to say, because we weren’t so close with them [Jews who were not family members], but you could see the merchants on the streets. There were stores, different kinds, textile and grocery stores. Mother mostly bought from Jewish shops. Even though she didn’t follow all those rules. I only knew the area of pre-war Lodz where I lived. I didn’t go to the mikveh, or to the synagogue, I didn’t even know where they were.
