IMAGINE - Active Remembrance Through Jewish Women’s Stories is a continuation of the HerStories-project. It was created with the belief that remembering personal stories of Jewish Holocaust survivors is a powerful way to promote knowledge about Jewish life but also the Holocaust. By exploring the biographies of 14 Jewish women who lived through the 20th century, Centropa seeks to make Jewish life meaningful and relatable for young Europeans. The project goal is to use this deeper understanding to support and raise awareness for the EU Strategy on combating antisemitism.

The project will produce a diverse range of outputs, including lesson plans, posters, and a series of explainer videos. These will be developed through university and school workshops, teacher training seminars, and commemorative events. Feel free to explore our events below!

Aiming to reach as diverse an audience as possible, this project is a collaborative effort involving key partners such as Centropa (Germany & Hungary), the Galicia Jewish Museum (Poland), the Center for Education Policy (Serbia), HERMES (Croatia), The International Commission (Lithuania), The University of Patras (Greece) and JewLIF (Germany).

The IMAGINE project is generously supported by the European Union under the CERV-2024-CITIZENS-REM Call.

Events

KickOff-Event in Berlin

Our three-day kick-off event took place in person at the Polish Institute in Berlin from May 12-15, 2025. The event brought together 64 participants from 8 European countries, including students from Germany, Poland and Ukraine and at least one representative for each project partner.

The participants explored Berlin's Jewish heritage through a city-wide scavenger hunt, a visit to the Topography of Terror and exploring the region near the Hackescher Markt – a specific focus being the end of World War II and remembrance culture as part of the commemorative year 2025.

During their visit to Berlin, the participants presented Jewish women's stories from their local perspectives – all whilst gaining insights on the EU strategy on combating antisemitism and fostering Jewish life.

The event also included the first in situ Transnational Partner Meeting, where the project partners discussed further steps for the IMAGINE project.

  • University Students Workshops

We will organize two-day University Students Workshops in each of the project countries (Germany, Lithuania, Croatia, Serbia, Hungary, Poland, and Greece). While the dates have not been set yet, we are beyond excited for the valuable exchanges and project outputs (lesson plans & posters) that will result from the students’ efforts.

  • School Students Workshops

We will organize one-day School Students Workshops in each of the project countries (Germany, Lithuania, Croatia, Serbia, Hungary, Poland, and Greece). These workshops will focus on local forms of remembrance, all whilst stressing the connection between Jewish womens’ stories and history on a broader level.

  • Teacher training seminars

At Centropa, we think it’s critical to equip teachers with knowledge and tools for conveying ethical reflection, the importance of remembrance, and collaborative learning. This is why IMAGINE includes two transnational teacher training seminars, to be held in Krakow in Belgrade. More information on applications following soon!

  • Voices of Remembrance

This series of online webinars, to be held separately in each project country, aims to create short animated explainer videos on local aspects of Holocaust History and commemoration practices. We will be seeing the videos at our joint transnational online conference, but rest assured that they will be available for the broader public online as well!

  • Commemoration Events

We are happy to announce that IMAGINE includes commemoration events in each of the project countries. We will promote local Jewish history through walking tours, public film screenings as well as poster exhibitions created as a result of our University Students Workshops (mentioned above).
