One speaking for many: Gizela Fudem

Based on the Centropa interview, Gizela Fudem’s personal story—a Holocaust survivor’s journey—became the inspiration for an educational project linking two cities with distinct histories, the two cities in which she spent most of her life: Tarnów and Wrocław. Her life became a bridge not only between these places, but also between the past and the young people involved.

During the course of the project, the students learned about Gizela’s experiences, visited sites connected to her life, and searched their local archives for rare documents, photographs, and testimonies. Their work became both a historical investigation and an emotional journey into the life of someone who rebuilt her world after profound tragedy.

This exhibition is the outcome of months of effort, collaboration, and dedication. It reflects the students’ journey and their understanding of the value of memory. Through their commitment, Gizela Fudem’s story gains new life—serving not only as a reminder of history, but also as an inspiration for dialogue between people and cities.

The project is being implemented by our longstanding partner, the Education Department of the Galicia Jewish Museum in collaboration with Centropa, ZSEO Zespół Szkół Ekonomiczno-Ogrodniczych w Tarnowie  and Liceum Ogólnokształcące nr V we Wrocławiu . The realization of this project was made possible by the support provided by EVZ Foundation  as part of the Local.History program.
