Iosif Grunberg with his wife Ani Grunberg

This is my father’s elder brother, Iosif Grunberg and his wife, Ani Grunberg. The photo was taken in 1919 in Philadelphia, and they sent it to my father. It says on the back: ‘souvenir from your brother and sister-in-law, Joseph and Ani, Philadelphia.’ They were already married at the time, if you look closely, you can see their wedding rings. Ani was from Bucharest, and she worked as a dressmaker, and Joseph was a photographer. They have two children, Sophie and Evelyn.

Grandmother Adela Grunberg went to the USA to live with them in the late 1920s, when I was eight or nine years old. We called Uncle Iosif 'Uncle Joe', and he wrote to us from time to time, and so did his wife, even if his mother didn’t approve of my mother much and they didn’t talk.

We kept in touch with them before World War II, they used to write to my father. During the war, we couldn’t write to them, but as soon as the war was over, we resumed our correspondence. Iosef died when he was 86, but she died sooner, I don’t remember exactly when; she had heart problems. I don’t know if they were buried in a Jewish cemetery.
