Pasostar ando Prastape

Pasostar ando Prastape – Breaking into a Gallop is an international exchange and education project on the genocide of the Roma during the Nazi era. Developed by Centropa (Germany) and Terraforming (Serbia), in cooperation with the Intercultural Institute Timișoara (Romania) and the TENET Center for Social Transformations (Ukraine), the project supports the implementation of the IHRA Recommendations on Teaching and Learning about the Persecution and Genocide of the Roma during the Nazi Era. Its aim is to identify persistent gaps in education and remembrance and to translate the IHRA Recommendations into practical approaches for teachers, museum educators, and memorial professionals.

Between April and October 2025, the project organized three international workshops in Vienna, Westerbork, and Belgrade, bringing together around 100 educators, researchers, museum and memorial professionals, policymakers, and representatives of Roma, Jewish, and civil society organizations from across Europe. The workshops addressed the continued marginalization and misrepresentation of Roma history in education, museums, and public remembrance, explored ways of strengthening Roma participation and perspectives, and developed approaches to more inclusive teaching and commemoration. Particular emphasis was placed on co-creation with Roma communities, the use of authentic historical sites as “living classrooms,” local microhistories, digital and visual storytelling, and youth-led educational activities.

The workshops also highlighted the concrete support many educators still need, including training opportunities, ready-to-use teaching materials, and methodological guidance for site-based learning. Building on the findings and expertise generated through the workshop series, the project will therefore focus in 2026 and 2027 on developing a practice-oriented compendium that translates the IHRA Recommendations into concrete tools, methods, and guidance for educational and memorial work. The publication will be available in both digital and printed formats and will be accompanied by an online conference and targeted dissemination activities. At the same time, the project seeks to strengthen the transnational network of schools, memorial institutions, museums, experts, and Roma organizations established through the workshops and to support lasting cooperation across Europe.
