About

Who are we?

Founded in 2000, Centropa was created with two goals in mind: to use the newest technologies to preserve Jewish memory in the lands where Jewish life had been all but wiped out, and to share those stories with the widest possible audience. Working closely with teachers from the very beginning, Centropa transforms personal histories, photographs, and archival materials into engaging educational resources. The Centropa Summer Academy brings this mission to life by immersing educators in historical places, collaborative learning, and story-based approaches that strengthen classroom teaching.

What is the Centropa Summer Academy?

The Centropa Summer Academy (CSA) is an immersive, international professional development learning experience  that brings together 65 educators from 16 countries to study 20th century Jewish history and the Holocaust in the landswhere it happened and to transform that experience into classroom teaching. Since the first Summer Academy  in 2007, Centropa has taken teachers to the great cities of Central Europe , meeting historians and journalists, engaging with primary sources and local Jewish community members and collaborating on lesson ideas inspired by what they see and learn.

What makes CSA unique is its peer-to-peer model: educators from different countries and backgrounds work together, share perspectives, and continue collaborating long after the program ends. To date, 1,190 teachers from 21  countries have participated, building a global network that connects teachers and students across borders and helps them engage meaningfully with 20th century Central and Eastern European history, Holocaust history, and civil society in the 21st century.

Previous CSAs

This year marks the 20th CSA. Explore highlights below from past academies to get a sense of what makes the CSA such a unique experience.

  • CSA 2014, Vienna Sarajevo

An international traveling workshop for 85 teachers, pedagogical experts, and museum educators. Some historians say the twentieth century began in Sarajevo in 1914. We believe the twentieth Century also ended in Sarajevo in 1992. In between the Austrian Archduke’s assassination and the Bosnian Serb siege of Sarajevo, there is—among all the history, tragedy and epochal events—a Jewish story to tell, one that is relevant for all of us: Jews, Muslims and Christians, North Americans, Europeans, Israelis.

  • CSA 2024, Berlin

Berlin was the classroom, 70 educators from 16 countries were the fellow students. We explored Berlin’s most historic sites with top notch guides; discussed the city’s turbulent history with academics; met with politicians, journalists, and activists and much more!
