Vienna, Prague, Terezin—and You
From 2-10 July, join Centropa and 65 teachers from 16 countries as we walk the streets of Vienna and Prague, take an interactive tour of Terezin, learn from scholars, visit historic sites of the 20th century, and design cross-cultural projects to bring together students from the US, Europe, and Israel.
Twenty-five years ago, Centropa set about preserving Jewish memory by interviewing elderly Jews in Central and Eastern European countries, digitizing their old family photographs, and making short films telling the most compelling stories. The Centropa Summer Academy builds on that mission by inviting teachers to learn those stories and teaching the world to remember with us.
I was moved to witness so many horrific places where the Holocaust took place....I now stand as a witness after the fact to these events. You cannot overemphasize the impact of being at a historical location.
Fredy Reyes, Holocaust/Genocide teacher, NJ (CSA 2024)
Over the last 20 years, we have brought 1,190 educators from 21 countries to our Summer Academies, and we focus on two goals:
- to expand the knowledge base of our teachers, and
- to enrich their skill set for combining technology, personal stories from our archive, and European history so they can create dynamic learning experiences for their students.
That way, when our participants walk back into their classrooms, they are armed with great resources they can easily access, lesson plans they have written themselves, and a network of other teachers just waiting to carry out projects together
