MemoryLanes: Paths of Remembrance to Jewish Life

This project will create new ways to remember Jewish life in Germany, Poland and Serbia. Teenagers will research Jewish biographies from the Centropa archives and using artistic approaches, create their own remembrance projects based on places which were important to Jewish life in the cities Bielsko-Biała, Kielce, Belgrade, Berlin and Mannheim. Places which were of importance to individuals, whose significance is not yet well-known within the context of European remembrance culture, will thereby be made visible.

Target Groups, Project Countries and Partners

The project is targeted at teenagers from Germany, Poland and Serbia. In close cooperation with our partners, Galicia Jewish Museum (Krakow) and the Center for Education Policy (Belgrade), as well as teachers from Germany, the teenagers taking part will develop remembrance projects under the guidance of artists. The transnational exchange between teenagers, which also shows the breadth of European Jewish history in the 20th century, is central.

Project Formats

Performances, digital storytelling, graphic novels and city walking tours will be developed by teens under the watchful eye of experienced artists. Ideas will be developed over the course of conferences and hybrid workshops and exchanged in an online platform and a dedicated Instagram account. Over the course of the project, a travelling exhibition based on Jewish biographies in the project locations will be developed by the participants. The remembrance activities developed by participating teenagers will also be added to an AR app, anchoring formerly invisible places of Jewish life as new places of remembrance.
