קורט ברודמן מספר את סיפור משפחתו: כיצד אביו שחקן התיאטרון, ליאופולד, התאהב בפרנצי גולדשטאוב אשר ישבה בקהל בעת שהציג. פרנצי באה ממשפחה אורתודוכסית והוריה לא הסכימו שתתחתן עימו. משום שליאופולד היה מאוהב כל כך, הוא החליט לוותר על קריירת המשחק ונכנס לעסקים. ליאופולד ופרנציסקה גידלו שני בנים. במהלך מלחמת העולם השנייה, הארי, בנם הראשון נמלט לאנגליה וקורט היגר לפלסטינה. ההורים מצאו מפלט בשנחאי, סין. שם, פתחה פרנצי בית קפה וליאופולד שב לשחק. לאחר המלחמה, שבה והתאחדה המשפחה בווינה.
