Oto Konstein visiting his maternal grandmother’s grave

In this photo, that was taken not too long ago, I am visiting my maternal grandmother’s grave in Cakovec.

Together with me are my wife Katarina, standing on the right, and my friend Eva Schwartz who lives in Budapest today. Eva is a good friend of mine since our childhood.

She is the daughter of dr. Schwartz, who was the president of the Jewish Community Cakovec. During the time this photo was taken, she was visiting us and wanted to pay respect to my grandparents and parents by visiting their grave.

My maternal grandmother Malvina Heimer died in 1938 in Cakovec and was buried on Jewish cemetery. My maternal grandfather Leopold Heimer is also buried there. Whenever I come to Cakovec these days, I go to visit the grave.

My parents Emil and Vilma Konstein and my sister Tea Konstein were murdered in the war. Mother and sister were murdered in Birkenau, and my father in Auschwitz Buna. Because of this, they don’t have a grave, they are not buried.

This was very difficult for me because I didn’t have a place to visit and pay my respect. For this reason, I built a memorial burial place for them. This memorial is also in the Jewish cemetery in Cakovec, close to the grave where this photo was taken.
