Centropa interviewed 98 Holocaust survivors in Vienna and 210 in Budapest. Because of the way we interviewed—spending three, four or five sessions with each of them--we built up relationships that neither side wanted to break. That’s why in 2006 we started Café Centropa.
In Vienna we meet eleven times each year; in Budapest, six to eight times.
We invite actors, opera singers and musicians to play for them, we invite novelists, journalists and politicians to speak—all so our Holocaust survivors know that we care for them and appreciate them. We send monthly newsletters, phone them often, and never forget a birthday.
In Vienna, 90% of all expenses are covered by those listed below, but we still fall short each year—and you can help.
In Budapest, we get no support from the Hungarian government although the Claims Conference covers most of our expenses.
We can do more if we have more, so join us today in supporting social programs for Holocaust survivors—in the lands where the Holocaust took place.
