ב-1939, שבועות מספר אחרי פרוץ המלחמה, בעלה ההונגרי של רוזה, מיכי, עמד על כך שיימלטו לבודפשט. שם – כך הרגיש – יהיו חייהם בטוחים. הוא טעה. מיכי וגם רוזה נעצרו ונכלאו במחנה ריכוז, ומיכי מת כעבור זמן מה בעבודת פרך. רוזה שוחררה, ובהמשך מצאה מסתור בבודפשט וניצלה; אך היא לא נחה ולא שקטה עד ששלחה את שתי בנותיה לפלשתינה, לחוף מבטחים.
אחרי המלחמה נישאה רוזה ליהודי וינאי, אלפרד רוזנשטיין, והם הקימו את ביתם החדש בוינה. הבן גיאורג היגר לישראל, שם חי תקופה ארוכה ואף הקים משפחה משלו, עד שלבסוף חזר לאוסטריה.
רוזה רוזנשטיין זכתה להגיע לגיל מופלג. היא הלכה לעולמה בשנת 2005, והיא בת תשעים ושמונה."
