Jeanette Torok and her brother, Dezso Gluck in their childhood

This photo was taken in Rozsnyo in 1872. The girl sitting in center is my maternal grandmother, Jeanette Torok, nee Gluck, at the age of three. The boy standing next to her is her brother Dezso, who was five years old at that time. The older girl is one of their relatives. In the year the picture was taken, they already had a one-year-old sister, Juliska, their brother Izidor was born in that year, and their sister Irma was born seven years later. The Gluck siblings lived in a moderately wealthy middle-class intellectual family in Jolsva, near Rozsnyo. After the early death of their mother, they moved to Budapest with their father, Adolf Gluck, in the second half of the 1880s. Later they got a little bit scattered geographically: Izidor and Juliska immigrated to America, my grandmother Jeanette lived in Vienna for a while, and Dezso traveled very much later as a surgeon at sea. The close relationship among them remained throughout their entire life. Irma and Dezso, who were especially close to each other, probably because they both suffered from pulmonary tuberculosis, died before 1920. My grandmother corresponded with her siblings living in America until her death in 1945, namely until the beginning of World War II, so until it was possible. Then my mother corresponded with her cousin born in America.
