This photo was taken in Piestany in 1927, and is of Vera Tolnai. Vera was from a well-off family. Her father was a Jew who’d converted to Christianity so that he could marry Vera’s mother. Their children were brought up in the Christian faith. Their aunt was a piano teacher, and we used to visit them often, and they visited us often as well. You know, Piestany is a small town. Her older sister had a talent for languages. After the war she even worked at the British Embassy. Later that enabled them to emigrate to Great Britain. From there they then moved to Canada. In time we stopped communicating. Their father had to go into hiding during the war. He managed to survive. Exactly how and where they survived the war, I have no idea. They didn’t talk about it, and we didn’t ask.
