Magdalena Berger's father David Grossberger with other captured Jews and Serbs

My father David Grossberger and my mother's brother Stevan Guszman (in buttoned-up jacket behind the man in uniform on the left) are pictured here with captured Serbs and Jews in Sombor in 1941. In April 1941 when the Hungarian occupation forces arrived in Sombor, many Jews and Serbs were captured as prisoners of war. My father paid half of the required 2 million Hungarian pengos and together the other people in the picture collected the remaining million pengos. This picture was taken before the people pictured in the photograph were released from captivity. After paying this sum all the people in this photo were released. After their release they had to perform forced labor every day. My father was later deported, and died in Auschwitz.
