Leib Loshak and family

There are my father's grandparents and their family. The photo was made in Berdichev approximately in 1855. I don't know all their names. My grandfather Leib Loshak is on the right, and his brother Tsadik is on the left. My grandparents were religious, but they were not fanatics about all the canons. They kept all Jewish holidays and traditions, but I cannot say that they attended the synagogue regularly. I was born on June 14, 1937, in Berdichev, Zhitomir region. Berdichev was a small town. Most of the population was Jewish. As far as I remember from my parents, relations between the Ukrainians and Jews were good. My father, Govshia Loshak, finished only elementary school. He 'inherited' the profession of repairing sewing machines. My parents kept Jewish traditions and holidays, but they were not religious. Around 1936, my mother, Sarah Raygorodetskaya, began to work at the passport department in the city police department. Because of her official position, she was afraid to go to the synagogue. I remember well that after the war people were watched, and my mother was always afraid that somebody would learn that we celebrated Passover or other Jewish holidays at home.
