David Kohen in Haskovo with friends

This photo was taken on 2nd January 1943 in Haskovo. From left to right are my friends and schoolmates Atanaska Semizova, Kana Donuzova (Paskaleva), I, Zhoro Zdravkov, Rumen Damyanov, and Yosif Kirev Delchev.

This was a very precious day for me because it was then that my classmate Atanaska Semizova (married Zdravkova) asked me to write in her notebook something to express my point of view on life. Then I wrote the following text: 'When? 23rd May 1943. Where? Charleston confectioner's. How? Eating ice-cream. I wish you a sober and healthy view to the surprises of our century, hoping that the near future will destroy all that is old and decayed for a new joyful and creative life.’ David.
