"Survival in Sarajevo" Project: Final event in Bucharest

On the 17th of December, we organized our final event for the Centropa Survival in Sarajevo Project in Bucharest. The project took place between October 2016 and December 2017, and involved more than 40 teachers and 90 students from Romania. We created a Romanian voiceover for our multimedia film "Survival in Sarajevo", and also created a travelling exhibition about the story which shows how the small Jewish community of Sarajevo worked together with Muslim, Catholic and Orthodox neighbours to help the city during the time of a crisis.

Students were asked to created their own projects inspired by this story. In Romania, 6 projects were created, where students went to help ill children, gave voluntary music lessons to disadvantaged peers, and learned about the different cultures and ethnicities of Romania - just to mention a few.

The final event took place in the State Theatre of Bucharest. During the event, the students presented their projects to each other, and received certificates and small prizes. As the event took place during the time of Hanukkah, students also learned about this holiday, lit candles together, and enjoyed special Hanukkah sweets – sufganiyot – together.

Our thanks goes to the Europe for Citizens Programme of the European Union for supporting the project, and to Anca Tudorancea and Esther Cotoarba to organizing the event.
