This is a letter, which my father, Iosif Samoil Tucherman, sent to his family in 1917. It reads as follows:
‘Bucegea, 6th February 1917.
My dear wife and my beloved child, dear mother and sister, there isn't any news yet. The wagons haven't arrived, but I am taking the train tomorrow morning to Pascani, to look for them. Do not worry about me since I am eating well and sleeping at a nice family that is taking care of me. Eat well and be brave! I am taking care of you here as well. I have bought 5 kg of dried plums, 2 kg of good peas, not rotten, rice, and I will also buy hens and eggs. I put my hopes in God, that, as soon as I make the delivery, I will be able to come home. I beg you to look after arranging the workshop. Don't spare 1 - 2 lei for a girl. Pay good wages and bring as many girls as possible, with or without machines, and make sure the workshop is big enough for its purpose. You could write me about what has already been done so far. Ask Marcovici if the goods have arrived, if anything has started. Send for Cearna. Give her 12 - 14 lei a week. Many kisses, and many greetings to my beloved Sofica.
