Centropa Summer Academy 2023: Application for US teachers

Welcome! We are delighted you are interested in our 2023 Centropa Summer Academy (CSA), which will take place in Vienna and Prague, 4-12 July. You can learn more about it at www.csa2023.centropa.org.

The call for European and Israeli educators is expected to open in late February.

We welcome applications from middle/high school teachers, county/district education/school administrators, & museum/Holocaust organization educators. We primarily have funding for public school educators from New Jersey; Baltimore, MD; South Carolina; North Carolina; Florida; Houston, TX; and Los Angeles. Preference will go to those who have used Centropa creatively and can show that Centropa will be a key resource in their teaching.

We estimate the total cost of the trip—including air fare—will be $5,000, and will follow these guidelines for covering trip costs for those accepted:

  • Public school educators
We will pay for your air fare and most ground costs (see below), including hotel. We appreciate any other funding you might be able to contribute, from a PTO/PTA, your school, a local organization, or other sources.
  • The Milton Wolf Prize in Student Advocacy Teacher Scholarships
New this year! We have scholarships for two US public school teachers (grades 6-12) who assign to their students Centropa’s student civic project competition. To learn more details continue with this application.
  • Private school & university, museum, and organization educators
We ask that your institution cover the entire cost of the trip.

All participants whose air fare & ground expenses in Berlin we cover must pay a $100 registration fee. All participants must purchase travel medical/trip insurance, cover your rides to/from airports, and pay for meals on free evenings.

Recommendation: write/save your answers in Word as you fill out this application in case they do not save properly.

The deadline for applications in North America is Monday, February 27, 2023. European and Israeli applications will be available at a later date.

Centropa resources

Have you ever used Centropa's education resources?

Please show us that you understand what we offer educators by doing the following:

  1. Go to the interviews at www.centropa.org and choose a country.
  2. Select a family name from the biographies, read the interview, and look at the photos from that family. Tell us how you would use these materials - or other stories - in your classes or work.
  3. Please watch one film from our film page (www.centropa.org/en/films), and tell us how you might use it in class.

Expenses

Including air fare, we estimate that the total cost of the trip will be $5,000, and we try to raise the funds for as many teachers as possible. However, we are small non-profit and money is often tight, so we ask CSA applicants to look for any school, county, state, or local funding you might apply for to help support the cost of your trip, and to tell us here any amount you think you might be able to cover towards the cost of your flights or ground expenses (i.e., in addition to the $100 registration fee, travel/medical insurance, rides to/from airports, and meals on free evenings).

Apply for a Milton Wolf Prize in Student Advocacy Teacher Scholarship

The Milton Wolf Prize in Student Advocacy is a civics student competition for US public school students, grades 6-12. Students identify a community problem, research the problem, research how local individuals and organizations are addressing the problem, create a visual presentation, and then do a presentation to people outside their school/class to advocate for others to get involved in helping with that problem. Students submit their project and proof of presentation, and can win cash prizes.

US public school teachers who assign the Milton Wolf Project to their classes can apply for a Centropa Summer Academy Milton Wolf scholarship; we have two for this year. If you are selected, attending the Summer Academy is contingent on your students submitting their projects by the deadline, which is April 28, 2023.

Teachers awarded the Milton Wolf Scholarship will be expected to present their adaptation of the Milton Wolf Project and their students’ work to other US teachers during the Summer Academy. They will also be responsible for covering the same costs as other participants: trip/medical coverage, getting to/from the airport, $100 registration fee.
