Teaching about the Holocaust through Primary & Secondary Sources: Centropa's and the FHM's Resources 2021

What is Centropa? Centropa, a Jewish historical institute based in Vienna, interviewed 1,200 elderly Jews living in 15 European countries. We didn’t video the interview or focus on the Holocaust, but asked our respondents to tell us their entirelife stories spanning the 20th c. as they showed us their old family photographs.

Centropa offers teachers a primary sources (annotated photographs, interviews), and secondary sources (award-winning, short multimedia films, none longer than 30 minutes) that teachers use to create virtual and in-class projects for teaching digital literacy, critical thinking, and global awareness. All are free of charge.

The Florida Holocaust Museum has provided Holocaust education across the state for almost 30 years. All primary and secondary sources shared by the Museum are free to teachers and students. We have digital and print content for grades K-12.

Perfect for Holocaust Education Week lessons and programming, teachers use Centropa and The FHM resources to teach Holocaust, social studies, ELA, art, foreign language, filmmaking, photography, and civics.

The approach to 20th century history and Holocaust education discussed during the program:

·  students relate to survivor interviews because they get to know survivors from their childhood through older age, and connect to their stories of growing up, overcoming hardship, and resilience;

·  pedagogy: no boxed curriculum—you decide how our resources work for you and your students;

·  cross-competency projects: Centropa’s Milton Wolf Prize for Student Advocacy empowers students to learn how to be active citizens, find a passion project, and educate people how to get involved;

·  international teachers network: Centropa’s summer Border Jumping Program matches you with teachers in Europe and/or Israel so you can create a global classroom through cross-cultural projects.
