The Power of a Promise

Reflecting about who we are and how we behave are central to the High Holiday experience. Beginning with Elul and running through Simchat Torah, Jews ask forgiveness for our sins and shortcomings. For sins against people we must ask people for forgiveness (ben adam lechavero), for sins against God we must address God (ben adam lemaqom). In this lesson students will study what it means to make and keep a promise. What do our promises – to ourselves, to each other, to God – mean if we don’t keep them? Do promises mean nothing or do promises mean everything

Homeland Project

This project will introduce you to editing in Adobe Premiere Pro, while letting you explore a social/historical issue. This issue affected many Jews in the 20th Century and is currently unfolding in Europe today as people from areas of conflict in the Middle East are fleeing and migrating into Europe. You will focus on the three areas of video production: preproduction, production and postproduction, and will form a narrative that has a beginning, middle and end.

Sarajevo Project for Jewish Day School Communities

The Bosnian-Serb siege of Sarajevo, from spring 1993 until winter 1996, was the longest in modern history. With electricity, water and food supplies cut off and only sporadically supplied, with 11,541 citizens shot by snipers or killed by mortars, Sarajevans had to depend on each other.

Let All Who are Hungry Come and Eat

In these two back-to-back lessons, students will explore Jewish values, Jewish identity, and the question of how to balance their ethnic/religious identities with being a citizen of the world.  Students will watch Centropa's film, Survival in Sarajevo: Friendship in a Time of War - the powerful story of how a small group of Holocaust survivors and their children worked with their Christian and Muslim neighbors to save each other and their city during the Bosnian war of the early 1990s.
