Water Pollution of the Baltimore Harbor: Sewage

This is a 2016 Milton Wolf Prize Runner-up project. Aijalyn Long and Zhydekhay Esguerra, 7th graders from The Mount Washington School in Baltimore, researched the impact of the enormous amount of debris, storm run-off, and sewage in the Baltimore harbor, which they describe as "harmful not only to humans but aquatic life such as fish, crabs, river otters, and many other animals." They examine the problem, and suggest ways for Baltimoreans to help out.

The POWER Initiative

This runner-up in our 2016 Milton Wolf Prize competition, Masilan Sundara, took initiative and developed his own program. This is what he writes in the introduction to his project: My name is Masi Sundara, I am an 8th grader at Buist Academy for Advanced Studies. Over my summer vacation, I visited India to do a community service project. I had a particular goal in mind. It was to help schools in rural southern India promote reading and make it appealing to the elementary school students there. I hoped to encourage used English general reading books.

Kids Keep Charleston Clean

This excellent Milton Wolf Prize winning project shows what can happen when students take initiative. Braedon Love, 7th grader at Buist Academy in Charleston, SC, wanted to volunteer but he was too young for any organization to accept him. So, he created his own: Kids Keep Charleston Clean, a volunteer organization that educates young people about the problem of garbage and trash in their community and recruits them to clean up streets and parks in Charleston.
