This is a picture from the forced labor battalion. My husband's elder brother Laszlo Gaspar , Laci is in it; he is the one on the edge, with his thin face, he is first from left, with his hand on the shoulder of the man next to him. These all were wearing white armbands, not yellow ones. [Editor's note: The white armband was worn by the Christians of Jewish origins, that is the ones who converted, and whom, according to the anti-Jewish laws in force were considered Jews. They have been deported to forced labor units for Christians.] Although the forced laborers were usually wearing yellow armbands. Laci has not been deported, because he, for the sake of his first wife, converted to Christianity and he wasn't taken away because he wore the white armband.
The people in this picture are forced laborers from Nagyvarad, they were working with pickaxes, it was some exploitation there. He never really liked to talk about it, he wasn't proud about this. On the back of this picture is written: '6th august 1943, Varpalota, forced labor battalion 110/61. People from Nagyvarad.'
