Solomon Abravanel and his sister and Marie Modiano

This is a picture of Solomon Abravanel and Marie Modiano, nee Abravanel, the brother and sister of my husband, Leo Abravanel. It was taken in Salonica, but I don’t know when.

Monis was the youngest of the eight children that my mother-in-law had. He was a very easy-going person, always smiling as you can see for yourself on this picture. We used to call him Monis, from Solomonicos, which means little Solomon. During World War I Solomon and my husband had gone to Switzerland in order to study. When they came back to Greece they had almost forgotten Greek. They went to a Greek restaurant and wanted to order something to eat but they could not find the right words. They wanted to eat eggs so they started making voices like chicken do.
