Souvenir of military service in Kayseri

I was born on May, 8th, 1924 in Istanbul as the child of a middle class family and grew up facing a lot of challenges.

I lost my mother when I was 3 years old. Even though my father remarried, he raised me and my older sister himself.

I had first served in Malatya in the military. Two years later, our regiment went to Kayseri.

On a day we were off, we had a souvenir photograph taken by a photographer who took the pictures of soldiers.

All of the airmen would have pictures taken like this during that period. We had pilot caps on our heads.

I am 7 years old in this photograph. It is a souvenir from first grade. I was studying in Okchu Musa elementary school, on Okchu Musa street in Kasimpasha, close to our home.

This was a Turkish school. The lady teacher in this photograph was our only teacher from first to fifth grade.

Nesim Levi, who was born as the second child to a middle class family in Istanbul, and who grew up facing a lot of difficulties, is today 83 years old, and is one of the richest people I have ever met in my life.

His wealth has nothing to do with money.  It is based completely on his moral values. The most important things in life for Mr. Nesim are his wife, his children and his grandchildren.

Yvonne Capuano-Molho with fellow girl scouts

This photo was taken on 29th June 1939 in Thessaloniki. On that day we, girl scouts, had our last reunion.

During the Metaxas dictatorship gatherings were forbidden and clubs were closed.

The best of all was that we were girl scouts. Every Saturday we gathered at the YMCA. The place where recently, in September 2005, there was a big fire.

I was a girl scout and we were all divided in four groups, the leader and the deputy leader. The group I was in was called ‘Amarantos.’
