Choosing to be Jewish Family Education Program

During this session families will learn the stories of several individuals who survived the Holocaust and then stayed in Europe after the war. They saw the destruction of the societies in which they grew up and they lived through the harshest years of Communist rule and, ultimately, witnessed the fall of Communism as well. During all this time they lived their lives and raised their families and chose to retain their Jewish identities.

Lo Ta'amod: A Jewish Values Family Education Program

In this family education program, we apply Centropa’s stories from our past to reflect on our values, and translate that learning into action for the present and future. The goal is for families to learn a wide variety of Jewish values and for each family to consider which values they want to consciously live by as a family, and then commit to them.

Jewish Surnames

The goal of these lesson plans, which should take about 16 hours of class time + home work, is for each student to produce a short biographical film on the subject of his/her family names. The themes of this unit are Jews Names, Historical Timeline, and the development of names and identities in the Jewish Diaspora.

A place to call home

Using nine Centropa films and one feature length documentary about the Jewish sports club of Vienna, as well as conducting personal interviews, students will examine factors affecting immigration in their own families, in addition to the diverse and complex factors affecting immigration and emigration patterns in 20th century Jewish history. 

This lesson explores the interplay between personal identity, physical location and the flow of Jewish history.

Number/length of Units: 6 weeks with 6 one-hour sessions.
