The wedding of Karoly and Iren Izsak

This photo was taken at the wedding of my parents, Karoly Izsak and Iren Torok, on 8th January 1928 in the Dohany Street Synagogue in Budapest. Mrs. Dezso Torok is standing behind the young couple, in the center; on the right in the first row there is Dezso Torok, on the left Klara Torok and her fiancé Gyula Biro. The others, with a few exceptions, aren't relatives. My mother didn't know of most of them who they were, and not even my father knew of many of them. Since he was the head of a big Jewish institute, his wedding counted as a significant Jewish community event, with a lot of people attending. An article was published about the wedding in the 'Kerteszeti Lapok' [Gardening Magazine], the paper of the National Hungarian Gardening Association. My mother kept the bridal bouquet in our glass-cupboard for decades. After the wedding they went on their honeymoon immediately, to the Italian and French riviera, via Vienna. My mother could experience it at once what being the wife of a deeply committed gardener meant. Between Nizza and San Remo they visited several big floricultures, where they received my father as an acknowledged professional partner and entertained him together with his young wife.
